Babies need to learn everything! A wide range of studies show that the first 1000 days of life (from conception to two) are the most important for your baby's brain development. How you interact with your baby from conception to two has a profound effect on their life outcomes — from academic success to health and mental wellbeing, concentration and focus through to resilience.

Yet only 11% of first-time parents spend time learning about child development while waiting for their baby to arrive. Before birth, only 44% of first-time parents feel prepared for parenthood, and only 18% feel confident as parents after the birth. Furthermore, 70% of parents of children from 0–5 feel judged about their parenting and their child's behaviour.

All learning happens from the simple to the complex. Each skill forms the foundation for the next skill. The stronger the initial learning is, the firmer the foundations are and the better we are able to learn the next skill.

During the first 1000 days, more than a million new synapse connections are being formed every second in your baby's brain. The way your baby's brain develops is shaped by the conversations, play, relationships and interactions you have with them — and it starts before birth. As a parent, you are literally helping build your baby's brain.

It sounds huge — and it is, but it doesn't need to be difficult. The key is understanding the learning your baby gets from the tiny activities you do every day. Understanding how these learning adventures build your baby's learning foundation ensures you are confident that you are doing amazing things for your baby every day.

Being confident as a parent is a game-changer. Confidence makes such a difference to your baby and their development. It's a win-win for both you and your baby. Research carried out by Dr Laura Outhwaite from UCL Institute of Education found the Oliiki app helped parents gain greater confidence in their skills as a parent in just four weeks.
