From Childhood Sewing to Adaptive Elimination Communication Clothing

I started sewing dolls clothes as a child.

I used whatever I could to make my own patterns and doll clothing.

I didn’t like the feel or look of the plastic dolls clothes, so I would buy real baby clothes from charity shops with my pocket money.

If I couldn’t find what I wanted, I’d make it.

Creating Clothing That Solves a Problem

As a young adult with multiple disabilities which caused sensitivities to temperature and touch, it was impossible to source appropriate clothing which would accommodate my challenges.

My friend’s little boy was having similar issues, so I started sewing clothing for him to wear.

My friend encouraged me to put my clothing out there as she suggested that other children with sensory issues would also benefit from my clothing.

So that’s how it all began.

As physical or sensory challenges often come together, I wanted to make sure those like myself, and my friend’s little boy could find affordable, adapted, ethically sourced, and beautiful clothing!

My Background

My previous work experience has included:

• Nursery Assistant
• Communication Guide for Deaf/blind adults and children
• Water-sports and outdoor activities instructor specializing in working with a range of disabilities, such as Autism

I am also passionate about art and photography.

Unfortunately, due to my disabilities, I had to stop physical work as I now require reconstructive surgery on both of my hips.

Creating a clothing label has brought me a new focus, where I can align my skills, needs and passion to help others.

Description of My Split Crotch Elimination Communication Pants

My split crotch elimination communication pants are different from what you sometimes see in warmer countries.

The split part covers the bottom, keeping things nice and warm.

Pull the crotch to the sides and the stretchy organic jersey easily pulls apart revealing them ready for the toilet.

They have enough room to fit a cloth nappy/diaper underneath or can be worn bare bottom.

All of my products have ‘grow with me’ cuffs and waistband or extending shoulders snaps/domes.

Start with the cuffs rolled up then as your child gets taller roll them down making the legs longer as they grow.

Fabrics and Materials

The organic cotton prints are chosen by me to be unisex so they can be handed down to siblings and friends and are inspired by my love of nature.

The plain jersey for cuffs and linings is currently the highest level of Oeko-Tex but as I’m using it up I am replacing it with organic plains.

My thread is R-PET. It is made from recycled plastic bottles. It is stronger than cotton threads so means the clothing should last even longer.

I’m hoping in the future to design my own prints and have already started making more designs for other elimination communication clothing such as dungarees.
